How do I connect BP1 to HA and how does it work?

Intro

Thank you for choosing BP1. Although it essentially just writes a standard ESP32 development board with a special ESPHome firmware, we have still added a casing option for it. This provides Bluetooth Proxy with an additional aesthetic choice, and also helps in reducing heat considering its compact size.

The methods and knowledge mentioned below are also applicable to other Bluetooth Proxy devices (including homemade ones).

So how do you use BP1? How do you make it work seamlessly with HA, without getting into the complexity of the technology?

In fact, it's very simple. Just connect it to the same network as HA, and HA devices will automatically discover it. (This process is similar to other ESPHome devices, such as our 1U, 2A sensors).

Step By Steps

This can be a bit confusing, as in fact the whole connection works by using BP1 as an HA to an extension part, and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much official documentation for this.

To make the whole process work you need:

  • Mate the BP1: Connect it to the same LAN as the HA so that the HA can discover it.
  • Add the device to HA: this is automatic, like all ESPHome devices, it is auto-discovered, and once it is found, you can click Add.

After these processes are done, the HA uses the Bluetooth extension capability, where you won't feel the BP1 working, but as soon as there is a nearby Bluetooth device, it will be auto-discovered in the HA's devices, and you'll be able to use those Bluetooth devices just like a normal device.

Configure the WIFI network of BP1

💡
Due to the limitations of the official firmware, hotspot configuration is not supported by default. You can only configure the network using a PC (which can also be a MAC or Linux) with Chrome browser installed. You will need to connect the machine with a TYPE-C data cable.

Method Summary:

  • Connect BP1 to a computer using a TYPE-C data cable.
  • Go to the configuration tool page: https://web.esphome.io/
  • It is an online tool, no need to download any client.
  • Click on Connect and select the serial port of BP1.
  • Connect to Serial Port

Select Configure WiFi, do not click Prepare to Initialize Use.
Select Configure WiFi, do not click Prepare to Initialize Use.
  • If everything is fine, seeing this screen means that the network setup was successful.
  • Configuring the Network Successfully!

How to connect a Bluetooth device with BP1?

Actually, this process is automatic. Once connected to HA, HA has an example of discovering Bluetooth devices.

Here is a video demonstration. After connecting BP1, HA without Bluetooth functionality can now discover the LD2410B human radar module:
